CONSTIPATION can be uncomfortable and affects people of all ages.
Most remedies take a while to work, but an expert has revealed how you can ease the discomfort symptoms – and fast.
A doctor known as the Belly Whisperer wrote on TikTok that there’s a specific utensil you need to take to the bathroom to get rid of constipation.
When her patients tell her they are constipated, she simply tells them to use a straw on the toilet.
She explained that when you try to reach the number two, you should blow out a straw to help you.
Constipation is usually caused by not consuming enough fiber, being less active, and not drinking enough fluids.
But you could also suffer from the condition stemming from medications, and people with weak pelvic floor muscles can also suffer from constipation if they have trouble pushing out a number two.
You could also be constipated if:
- You spend a long time sitting
- You are stressed or anxious
- You ignore the need to go to the bathroom.
dr Peterson explained that using a straw can help regulate your breathing, making it easier for you to puke.
On her Instagram page She said she likes to imagine blowing out birthday candles or bubbles while opting for a number two to avoid straining and pushing.
This, she says, can help strengthen your pelvic floor muscles.
“Powerful exhalation is critical to engaging your core and pelvic floor, so if you still have some poop in your rectum or feel like it’s right there but won’t come out, you can exhale to help the pelvic floor muscles and core to help “pinch it out” and get off without pressure or effort.
“The diaphragm plays a crucial role in core/trunk stability and breathing by controlling intra-abdominal pressure!
“That’s why it’s super important to practice diaphragmatic breathing,” she said.
Diaphragmatic breathing, also known as abdominal breathing, involves the full activation of the abdominal muscles and diaphragm while breathing.
I have constipation – when should I see my GP?
Most pharmacists can help treat constipation.
If you’ve tried making lifestyle changes, a laxative may be recommended.
These usually work within three days and should only be used for a short time.
You should see a GP if:
- They don’t improve with treatment
- You are regularly constipated
- Your constipation lasts a long time
- blood in your stool
- unexpected weight loss
- feel tired all the time
- Taking medications that cause constipation
You should always speak to your GP before stopping any prescribed medication.
This means that as you inhale, you’re pulling the diaphragm down with each breath — which helps the lungs fill more efficiently.
dr Peterson explained that this, along with changing your diet to include more fiber, can help with constipation.
The NHS states that drinking plenty of fluids and avoid alcohol can help relieve constipation, as well as adding foods like wheat bran, oats, or flaxseed to your diet.
She also said using a straw can help children suffering from constipation.
Learning to properly inhale and exhale with diaphragmatic breathing reduces stress on the spine by contracting in unison with the abdominal and pelvic floor muscles, she added.
dr Peterson said you should start by practicing long, slow, forceful exhalations in different positions first.
But said that you should practice these sitting on your back, side, stomach and knees before sitting on the toilet.
