‘I’m not giving up’ – Ruaidhri Higgins is optimistic about Derry’s away record after disappointing home defeat in Europe

Derry City manager Ruaidhri Higgins believes his side’s away record gives them a chance to salvage their European Championship next week in Latvia.

Erry has struggled to qualify for the UEFA Europa Conference League second round after a 2-0 home defeat by Riga FA, a goal each half from the visitors, while City also sent off midfielder Matty Smith.

They have lost away from home twice in the league this season and Higgins is confident his men can up their game in Riga for the second leg.

“I’m not giving up,” Higgins said. “We currently have the best away record in the League of Ireland. It will be interesting to go out there and score the first goal. If you concede a third goal it’s done. We didn’t do it. So we have to.” Go there with the intention of scoring the first goal and hopefully we’ll grow from that. I’m not ruling anything out.

“I’m not giving up anything. If we go there and play the way we can and put our noses forward, you never know,” added Higgins, admitting his side were second best.

“It was clear that we were also dealing with a good team and they were there. I think they lost a playoff last year to get into the group stage so they were around the block and have a lot of really good players but we know if we click next week and our best players play to their full potential then we can do something drastic. Our record away from home is very, very good, but hopefully that will continue next week.”

Higgins felt midfielder Smith was being treated harshly when he was sent off for a clash with Glody Ngonda. “I said to him, ‘Don’t interfere.’ It’s Matty’s irritation, no doubt about that, but you have to look at the incident, it’s not a red card,” Higgins said.

“He’s stupid to interfere. Our discipline this season has been exemplary, very, very good, but there’s no doubt about that. He imposed a decision on them and sent him off and I’ll never know why.”
