Rebel got a makeover around February 51 with the help of personal trainer Gunnar Peterson

In 2020, 42-year-old Rebel, best known for her self-deprecating role as “Fat Amy” in Pitch Perfect, announced that she is starting a “healthy year”, setting herself a goal weight of 11.8lb. .

She’s been on a transformational journey since then, molting around February 51 and becoming stronger than ever, with little help from her new personal trainer and head of athletics. at F45 Training, Gunnar Peterson.

59 years old training people like J.Lo and Kim Kardashian at his Beverly Hills gym.

So how did Rebel do it? We asked Gunnar for the inside track…

Gunnar, how does it feel to go to the gym with Rebel?

She is a joy. She’s driven, she’s fun to be around, as you can imagine, and she works hard. She Rebel WilsonWe get it, but she’s like everyone else in that her time demands are overwhelming at times. And her work schedule is nothing to envy. I work a lot and then I look at Rebel and I say, “My God, this woman!” She is producing, she is writing, a lot. She is non-stop. She was here yesterday. Kudo to her for finding time to exercise.

Celebrate or not, making time for exercise can be tough. What is your advice on making it a habit of yours?

Make it a priority and place it with ink, not with a pencil, so it’s not something that can move around in the schedule. Don’t have it as your TBD, use it as an anchor and let other things fit in with it. When you’re making another appointment, if it intrudes on your assignment, say, “That won’t work for me at eight, can we do it at nine?”

When Rebel is in the gym, how does she approach the workout?

That’s an athlete’s mindset – she’s getting it done. And every day doesn’t need a profile, it just needs to have something. I like that, because it’s a very practical and sustainable approach to fitness.

What does a typical training session with her look like?

There is no such thing as typical. The workouts I do here are similar to those of the F45 (a global bodybuilding community dedicated to high-intensity group training). You’re not just working on one piece of equipment like a treadmill, bike, or rowing boat – you’re working in different movements (moving different parts of your body up, down, side to side, and back/back). forward) – movements are functional, they will serve you in real life.

It’s a gentle scientific blend of cardio, resistance, and motion patterns HIIT – and you’ll see improvement throughout your life. So you’ll be on the treadmill, squatting, sledding, and lifting weights. Think two to three sets of eight to 12 repetitions with five different exercises.

Do you target specific areas, like belly fat, or focus on the whole body?

It’s full body. There’s no such thing as a ton of work done in isolation, just because it’s not good for your money, time wise. You might think, “I have time to do weightlifting, but I can’t do cardio” or, “I have time to do cardio, but I can’t be active or flexible.” Here, you get all of that.

Rebel has been around for two years, but where do you start for those just starting out on your weight loss journey?

Don’t try to change too much at once. If you try to overhaul the whole thing, you’ll end up messing things up and being less likely to stick together. You encourage other good, healthy, and maintainable changes, but you don’t say, “Okay, you’re going to work out six days a week, you’re going to eat this very strict regimen, you’re not going to have wine or dessert, you’ll get 8 hours of sleep, you’ll get rid of all the stress. “That just didn’t work.

That’s an athlete’s mindset – she’s getting it done. And every day doesn’t need a profile, it just needs to have something. I like that, because it’s a very practical and sustainable approach to fitness.

What works?

If you don’t do anything, I’d be happy if you started with a workout once a week. But then you have to add to that. And it must be based on a program. It shouldn’t be: “I go all out once, and then don’t do anything for seven days.” That won’t get you where you want to be. It’s not two, three, four or five hours in the gym.

You say, “Let’s practice a few times,” and then find time for yourself to walk. Step out your front door, turn left or right, walk 20 minutes, turn around, try to get back in less than 20. It’s about exercises that get your heart rate up (target 50% to 70). % of your maximum heart rate), plus a HIIT interval (for example, 30 seconds on, 30 seconds rest for six to eight minutes on the VersaClimber, or 15 kettlebell rotations).

How do you keep people motivated once they’ve achieved what they set out to be?

The quote is: “You are either striving to be better or allowing yourself to be worse” – there is no such thing as staying the same. The goal is never achieved. You may hit certain numbers, but that doesn’t mean you stop.

Once that becomes your normal, you will make changes to any subsequent components of your health that are missing. Some people go to sleep [easily], so we don’t have to adjust the sleep mode. Great, we’ll add workouts. And now let’s look at your diet, your stress levels, your hydration, or if you’re a smoker. There are a lot of things to attack, but do them in a way so that you don’t feel like your whole life is ruined. It’s a slow upgrade.

Rebel is under a lot of scrutiny, especially for her weight. What would you say to someone who feels nervous about going to the gym or what they will look like in Lycra?

With most exercise efforts, you don’t know what other people are going through. Everyone goes through their own story. They don’t judge you.

Is getting in shape as much of a mental challenge as it is physical?

I think it reinforces it, doesn’t it? You overcome certain difficulties and then you realize: “Wow, I made it. And I can do that. And I can keep doing that. ”

How do you want Rebel and everyone else to feel after a workout?

I love watching people get empowered and their capacity increased. I love looking at them to realize that they have control over how they look and feel. I have a sign on my gym door. It says: “You were better today.” I want people to go out feeling great.
