Parking on Mowbray Street is only allowed on one side of the road, meaning the street is often busy with parents picking up and dropping off their children from school, leaving local residents frustrated.

The mother of three who is heavily pregnant with her fourth child and
Difficulty getting up and down the stairs said she was concerned for her children’s safety.

Mariama said she was too scared to let her two children, Kadiatou, 8, and Aissatou, 7, go to school unaccompanied, even though they live across the street.

She said: “In my condition, I want to see my girls go to the gate and check that they are safe outside the door.

“But the situation with the cars makes it too dangerous. I’m too worried to let it happen.

“There were so many vehicles here when we were at school.

“I’m scared they’ll hit the kids.

“I would appreciate it if cars were banned from drop-off and pick-up.

“It will be upsetting for some parents. But the safety of the children must come first and is more important.”

Another resident, Francis Hamilton, 71, a retired program analyst who lives on the street, described it as a “horrible situation.”

The 71-year-old, who takes his grandson to kindergarten three times a week, says sometimes he can’t find a parking space.

He said: “I’ve seen people double and triple park on this street.

“Parents park wherever they want. You double park from bottom to top.

“Between 8:30 a.m. and 9:15 a.m. to 9:30 a.m. I can’t park and I can’t get out.

It’s terrible. It’s a really bad situation here. The school is the main problem.

“I sometimes find myself blocked. I’ll sit there for the five or ten
wait minutes. It is frustrating.”

“When the delivery drivers come in their white vans, the situation is even worse,” he added.

“I am concerned about the safety of children.

“For the council to ban parents from parking here is a good idea, but I don’t think it would work.

“I think it could exacerbate the problem in some ways because the problem would then be shifted to other roads.”

“BAD SITUATION”

Linda Cherry is a 54-year-old social worker living on the street.

She said it might work best for everyone if the council introduced parking permits and installed cameras that picked up cars’ number plates.

She said: “It’s terrible. It’s a really bad situation here. The school is the main problem.

“Not only the parents, but also the teachers.

“There are also people who park on the street and walk into town.

“As a resident, you can’t park at all.

“You can drive around for 20 minutes looking for a place.

“Even the back alleys behind the street are getting clogged with cars.

“And when people double park, you get blocked.

“Parents open their doors to let their kids out and they knock on your car.

“You worry about children having an accident.

“It’s not just the children, it’s the animals too. I have a couple of cats and
I’m worried they’ll come out and get hurt.”
