I’m the UK’s oldest lorry driver… people are always amazed at how many hours I work at the age of 90 – but I love it

Britain’s oldest lorry driver has announced he will continue to drive lorries for a year after passing a health test.
Brian Wilson still has a busy schedule and gets up at the crack of dawn despite his 90 years of age, but insists he wouldn’t have it any other way.
The father of four still gets up at 4am to work a 12-hour shift, 70 years after he began his career as a petrol supplier for Esso in 1953.
He had previously driven armored trucks while stationed Germany 1950 for military service.
He worked for the petrol giant before taking a job at his father’s trucking company, which he has run since the 1970s.
Brian from Sheffield, YorkshireHe has to undergo a full health check by his doctor every year to keep his driver’s license and, after passing the check-up, looks forward to another year on the road in 2023.
The eager driver said: “Well, if I feel fit enough, then I’ll keep going even when I’m old.”
He’s racked up millions of miles behind the wheel over his seven-decade career, but he doesn’t limit himself to “short trips” of around 150 miles.
Despite his long journeys, he has never had an accident and the last time he took a break was 50 years ago when he broke his foot and was unable to drive for seven weeks.
Brian added: “It all depends on how busy I am, but I’ve been busy this week.
“I’ve been working every day and will probably work 40+ hours this week.
“I work for myself and I wouldn’t do it if I worked for someone else. I’m so used to doing the job that I just kept going.”
However, all good things must end and Brian is considering retiring next year.
He plans to move to Thailand with his wife Mavis, 89, to be with one of their sons who runs a business there.
The couple met at a fairground when Brian was 15 and married six years later.
Brain continued, “She’s telling me to keep going while I still feel fit enough.
“Also, I have to keep working because the gas and electricity bills are going up.”
