Meet the disgraced Irish teacher who was kicked out of the US after he had an improper relationship with a student.
illon Gaffney received an eight-year prison sentence in Texas in 2018 after he was convicted of three counts of having an improper relationship with a student and three counts of sexually assaulting a child under the age of 17.
Gaffney (29) returned to Ireland and worked on a construction site after being released from prison and deported from the US.
The former teacher was asked if he could say anything in his defense.
“Yes,” he replied, “but I don’t really want to say it.
“I just wanted to relax. I was having a terrible time. There’s so much I want to say… but not right now. I’m just trying to adjust to life here. It’s hard. towel.”
With an ashes cross on his forehead to mark Ash Wednesday and wearing a pair of construction boots on his shoulders, Gaffney’s current occupation is a lifetime of being removed from the privileged position he enjoyed while working. He was getting a new job in another school when he was arrested then two others arrived, according to reports.
Gaffney had just finished her first year as head coach of the girls’ soccer team at Huntsville High when she was arrested.
He originally went to America on a football scholarship, then transferred to a university in Texas, where he was on the team roster.
He was arrested in August 2017 and held in the Matagorda County Jail under a sum of US$375,000 (€318,000).
A spokesperson for the Matagorda County Jail at the time said Gaffney pleaded guilty to all six counts on May 3, 2018.
Gaffney received an eight-year prison sentence in Matagorda County Court for each of the six convictions, which were tried concurrently.
He was also fined $10,000 (€8,500) for one of three counts of Improper Relationship between Educators and Students and was registered as a sex offender.
Gaffney faced a first release date of August 2025 but was eligible for parole in August 2021 and has now returned home to Co Kildare.
While an inmate at the Texas Department of Corrections, he posted on the Write A Prisoner website looking for potential friends to send him letters while serving his sentence.
In his short bio on the website, he explains how he moved from Ireland to Texas and that he’s looking forward to “new adventures” when he’s out.
“What’s the matter! My name is Dillon. I’m from Dublin, Ireland. I moved to the US in 2010 to play college football. I went to school outside of Richmond, VA but transferred to the University of Texas in Brownsville a year later That’s how I ended up in Texas.
“My hobbies are sports (soccer, soccer, boxing and a few Irish sports – hurdles and soccer). I love history; I used to be a social studies teacher around the world. liberal. I also like psychology. I studied communication at the University and graduated in 2015. “
“To describe myself in a few words, I would say energy, compassion, happiness and humour. I love to laugh and live life.”
“So being locked up can be tough, especially being so far away from home. But life isn’t all bad… it can always get worse.”
“I’ve got an active lifestyle in the world so I’ll continue that when I’m out. I’ll be deported when I’m out so I’ll have a new adventure.”
“Well, I’d love to hear from you,” he wrote.
The Palacios Independent School District that hired Gaffney released a statement shortly after his arrest in which it expressed disappointment at his arrest.
Dr Alexandro Flores, Director of Palacios ISD School, said: “We are deeply saddened to be informed of the recent arrest of Palacios High School Teacher/Coach Dillon Gaffney for having inappropriate relationship with at least one former student during his time with our district.
Mr. Gaffney worked for our district during the 2015-2016 school year as a social studies teacher/assistant football coach.
“During his tenure here, we were not aware of any inappropriate interactions between Mr Gaffney and any of our students.
“Despite our district’s best efforts to thoroughly test and screen all incoming employees, we are ultimately unable to predict the future behaviors or actions our employees may take. I will show.”
Dr. Flores went on to say that the district works to protect the well-being of students.
“What we can tell you with certainty is that we will always monitor and investigate any complaints, allegations or reports regarding any form of inappropriate contact between employees. and students and will not hesitate to take immediate and effective action when necessary and warranted.
“Unfortunately, we live in a time when incidents of this kind can happen anywhere, even in smaller rural districts like ours. No one is really immune.”
