In the blue corner: Ten fights remain as Gardaí take on New York firefighters in Dublin fight night

A team of Garda boxers will face off against New York firefighters at a special event in Dublin next week to celebrate the force’s centenary.

In recent weeks, 10 Gardaí have been put through their paces at Garda Boxing Club in preparation for fight night at the National Stadium.

It is the first time in more than three years that the two rescue services will face off. Tickets for the event, which starts at 7pm on Friday 23 September, are available at the door.

A total of 20 boxers are expected. A female fight is also planned.

Brian Sutton, head coach of the Gardaí, said it was going to be a great night of boxing “where the Americans are here to walk the thin blue line”.

Speaking of the Gardaí’s “long and proud” involvement in the sport, he said it can be traced back to Second Garda Commissioner Eoin O’Duffy using boxing clubs as a vehicle to induct officers into the local communities.

He said: “This is also evident in this year’s Garda/IABA Community Outreach program, with members of An Garda Síochána visiting and interacting with boxing clubs across the country.

“You meet young people where they feel comfortable and build bridges to form stronger, safer and happier communities.”
