In the ‘dirty’ home of a couple jailed for child neglect

These images show the moment police found 35 dogs in a “dirty” home.

A couple had 36 dogs and seven children at their three-bedroom Eastbourne home.

Christopher Bennett, 35, and Gemma Brogan, 41, of Eastbourne ‘systematically abused seven children’.

They were jailed on Friday November 4 on child neglect charges after being indicted by the RSPCA on animal cruelty charges earlier this year.

Police were called to the home in June last year.

“Upon entering the address, our officials were shocked at the state of the property and had grave concerns for the welfare of all the children. The stench as you entered the hallway hit officers hard – they couldn’t breathe normally due to it,” said Detective Constable Fiona Ashcroft of the East Sussex Safeguarding Investigations Unit.

“The condition of the whole house was shocking and appalling – cluttered and littered with discarded clothing, rubbish, rotting food and animal feces. It looked like it had been dirty for a number of years.”

As Detective Constable Ashcroft described the scene: “From the room off the hall came a deafening barking and barking of dogs.

“When the door to the living room was opened, officers were shocked to see dozens of dogs scrambling on top of each other to try to reach the open door.

“All the dogs looked malnourished and skinny. Their fur was greasy, matted, and covered with the others’ feces.

“Amid the dirt and dog scuffle, officers removed a sleeping child from the sofa, dressed only in a soiled diaper, who was run over by dogs.”
