As written in Richard Condon’s overheated fun novel, Eleanor Iselin is Lady Macbeth equipped for Gertrude’s incestuous sex drive. This is not hamartia – it is strength. And it was only an eleven-hour moment of clarity that forced Shaw to kill his mother and stepfather. As screenwriter George Axelrod puts it, Eleanor’s sexual feelings for Shaw are acknowledged but never fulfilled. It works better this way. You feel that Eleanor has literally overplayed (Shaw’s murderous instincts are triggered by the Diamond Queen), but you doubt the young man’s determination – and this doubt is entirely predictable. based on Lansbury’s performance.
Lansbury’s Eleanor is an evil reptile. She holds in her hands not only the fate of her horny husband and drug-addicted son, but also the global balance of power. She successfully, through years of coordination with the Soviet Union, staged a palace coup. Once the spouse’s drunkenness assumes power, she will call the shots and destroy her enemies. For her, the United States is not enough, and this is the one who caused the hit – she doesn’t know Shaw has been brainwashed.
That is, as Roger Ebert noted in his Amazing Film essay, a reckless, seemingly illogical move toward Russia. But of course these Kremlin bad guys underestimated Eleanor.
