Whytes
It’s been a good auction week for Daniel O’Connell. A portrait of the Liberator (estimated €12,000-18,000) by Sir Martin Archer Shee was sold at Whyte’s on 26 September for €34,000.

It is considered an important portrait as it is the only official likeness to show O’Connell with his natural receding hairline, rather than his famous wig. O’Connell’s bald head and his efforts to hide it were derided by satirists of his day. See whytes.ie.
