Today, a defense official said Russian shelling killed one civilian and wounded five in Luhansk.

Speaking on Telegram, Serhiy Hayday said that artillery attacks killed five other civilians in the town of Rubizhne, which has been under attack by Russian forces for weeks.

He said four other towns in Luhansk were shelled overnight, causing fires in apartment buildings and houses.

Amidst the suffering and bloodshed, uplifting images capture the heroism shown by rescuers as they rescue a woman buried in the rubble.

Pictures of the efforts came when the Governor of the Luhansk region of Ukraine announced that Russian forces had gained control of 60% of the town of Rubizhne.

Luhansk Governor Serhiy Gaidai also accused a former official of aiding Russian forces by spreading information through an online post.

Gaidai said Russian forces carried out 81 mortar, artillery and rocket attacks across the region in the past day.

The terrifying estimate of Russia’s progress came as authorities in the region urged civilians to evacuate “while it was safe”, warning that the bombardment could cut off escape routes.

“We will take everyone out if the Russians allow us to go to the rendezvous points (to evacuate).

“Because, as you can see, they don’t always see the fires.

“I urge all residents of the Luhansk region – evacuate while it’s safe … While there are buses and trains – take this opportunity.”

Deputy Prime Minister Iryna Vereshchuk said in online comments that Ukraine wants to open 11 humanitarian corridors on Wednesday to evacuate civilians.

Mr. Gaidai said rail connections in the Donbas region of Donetsk were damaged this week and took several hours to repair.

“This is another alarm bell,” he warned, and in a separate video said Russian forces were unable to breach Ukraine’s defenses in his area.

But they added that they were destroying “everything in their path” and would “stop at zero.”

Ukraine has warned that Russian troops are regrouping and preparing for a new offensive in the Donbas region, including Luhansk.
