Albania’s president has granted citizenship to British-Albanian pop star Dua Lipa for what he says is the artist’s role in spreading Albanian fame internationally through her music.
Bajram Begaj resident said Lipa was granted citizenship ahead of the 100th anniversary of Albania’s independence from the Ottoman Empire. Mr. Begaj said he feels honored to do so because Lipa has made Albanians famous around the world.
“I will also be a documented Albanian,” Lipa said before taking the oath of naturalization at Tirana town hall.
Lipa was born in London in 1995 to Albanian immigrant parents Anesa and Dukagjin Lipa, from Kosovo.
The Grammy Award winner, who started singing at the age of 5, was musically influenced by her father, a former singer and guitarist of a rock band.
She started posting her songs to YouTube when she was 14 years old. Her debut studio album was released in 2017. In 2019, she won the Grammy Award for Best New Artist.
With her father, she co-founded the Sunny Hill Foundation in 2016 to raise funds with annual concerts held in her hometown of Kosovo to help those in financial difficulty.
“It was an indescribable great joy with acceptance, love and all that,” said Lipa. Then, the artist takes a photo of the passport, takes fingerprints and signs the application for an identity card and passport.
Lipa will be performing at Tirana’s main Skanderbeg Square today to celebrate Independence Day.
