Ukraine: Man thrown to the ground after explosion in Irpin

Frightened Ukrainians ran for their lives to avoid a major shelling as Vladimir Putin’s forces surrounded two cities.

Horrific images from Irpin, just 16 miles from the capital Kyiv, show people ducking for cover as rockets rain down around them.

Soldiers and local residents who refuse to leave their homes can be seen helping elderly citizens onto a bus as they try to escape the scare.

Lying around them are the bodies of those who didn’t make it to safety, having been shot at as they tried to leave.

A heartbreaking image shows the bodies of a family killed trying to escape surrounded by suitcases containing their belongings.

A resident has covered them with a blanket, but they remain a symbol of the innocent slaughtered by Putin’s illegal invasion.

The sad images confirm that the Russians are shelling civilians, despite assurances they are barred from gunfire.

Other images show people looking exhausted as they walk down streets littered with rubble that were once someone’s home or business, while flames lick the sky behind them.

Four people, including two children, are also said to have been shot while attempting to leave Irpin today.

The cataclysmic scenes of destruction are being repeated across the nation, now in its eleventh day under attack by the aggressors of Russia.

Thousands remain trapped in Mariupol after two ceasefires were ignored by the Russians this weekend.

A second attempt, scheduled to last between 10 a.m. and 9 p.m. local time, failed again when evacuees attempting to flee were met with heavy fire from Russian cannons.

About half of the city’s 400,000 residents remain in the city.

A ceasefire had been called earlier on Saturday, but it was also ignored, putting tens of thousands of lives at risk.

Since the beginning of the invasion, the coastal city has been heavily attacked.

The remaining residents have no electricity, water or heat as supplies of food and medicine are running out and people are starving.

Interior Ministry adviser Anton Gerashchenko said the planned evacuations had been halted because of an ongoing onslaught by Russian troops.

He said: “There can be no ‘green corridors’ because only the sick brain of the Russians decides when and who to start shooting at.”

The city council said in a statement: “It is extremely dangerous to take people out in such conditions.”

Pope Francis said Sunday he had dispatched two cardinals to Ukraine and said the Vatican was ready to do whatever it took to bring peace.

He said: “Rivers of blood and tears are flowing in Ukraine.

“This is not just a military operation, but a war that sows death, destruction and misery.”

The horror scenes will soon unfold in the historic port city of Odessa, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has warned.

He said: “They are preparing to bomb Odessa.

“Russians have always come to Odessa. You only ever felt warmth in Odessa. Sincerity only. And what now?

“Bombs against Odessa? Artillery against Odessa? Missiles against Odessa?

“It will be a war crime. It will be a historic crime.”
