Kate Garraway provided an insight into her and Derek Draper’s secret trip to Mexico for treatment.
The Good morning England the presenter, 54, joins her poor husband – who needs round-the-clock care after contracting Covid in March 2020 – for a secret trip to Monterrey in Mexico before Christmas.
And opening up about the trip, Kate admits it has given her real hope that there is treatment that will help Derek, after doctors discovered Derek’s condition through his documentary. family, Looking for Derek.
Speaking of her trip to Mexico, she told ITV’s Good Morning Britain: “It all started thanks to the first documentary.
“This is a doctor who works in the US and he has been working for many years in clinical trials of this treatment in the US and he is just waiting for its approval and of course, 11 years ago there was no Covid. , so he looked at it for other things.
“I can’t say too much about it because I definitely don’t want to but when he saw the documentary, he started helping people through the impact of Covid. He watched the documentary about it. Derek and like, I can help this man.”
Kate admitted the trip took months to plan, as she struggled to figure out if treatment would help.
“So I’ve had months of research to look at it and make sure it’s very safe because the last thing we want to do is anything negative. Ultimately, most logistically – because we haven’t actually taken Derek yet, she added.
Kate says it was tough getting Derek to Mexico and even though they’re only a quarter of the way through treatment, she knows that – if it works – it will change not only their lives but their lives. and the lives of many others.
She explains: “He has a center in Monterrey, Mexico for medical work, and it’s easier to get him there than anywhere else where he practices. We’re less than a quarter of that. way to implement this treatment.
“I don’t want to say too much but if this succeeds we will hope the world. It will have an impact not only on people with Covid but on all kinds of conditions. It’s a hope. We’re so lucky to have a documentary for him to hear about Derek.”
“He’s a very serious case, so he’s very useful as an experiment, because if he can solve the problem with Derek, that gives a lot of hope to those less fortunate. getting sicker from Covid and other things. I feel very lucky that he was able to get help from this,” she shared.
Kate also praised the British Airways team for supporting her and Derek throughout their journey, as she admits she feels hopeful about the future and how she and the kids can help Derek.
“British Airways’ help has given us a lot! They’ve given us a lot of support and they’re an incredibly helpful team,” she explains, “We’re seeing glimmers of hope, which is what That leads though to have more information on how we can help Derek in a very practical way.”
