One urban explorer has spoken of the “overwhelming” moment when he discovered an abandoned house that appears to have been untouched for decades.

Kyle Urbex stumbled upon the spooky property in the Brimington area of Chesterfield, Derbyshire, and found inside it dozens of old 1960s comics decaying on the kitchen counter.

Family photos and wedding snaps were eerily left out on the kitchen side, while toy cars believed to be around 50 years old were left mysteriously grouped.

The 25-year-old photographer from Leeds, West Yorkshire, who has been exploring hundreds of abandoned properties since 2020, also found two passports spread out on a table.

Kyle believes the house was temporarily occupied by a husband and wife.

He said: “So the house is in the Brimington area of Chesterfield and is very overgrown so it’s hard to see from the main road.

“After struggling through the brambles and nettles to reach the back door, which was wide open when I was inside, I came into the room where the passports were spread out on the table.

“One of the passports has the name Mr. WHJ Benham on the front, so I can assume the house was once occupied by a man and his wife.”

The occupants of the abandoned house appear to have left in a hurry, as the house has apparently not been inhabited for several years.

An Elvis Presley clock was found on the wall in the master bedroom, while comic books from March 1967 were found in the kitchen.

“Looking around, I found an old Elvis Presley clock on the wall in the master bedroom, but the main room of all was the kitchen, which has dozens of family photos, wedding photos, and old comics decaying on the counter,” Kyle said.

“I managed to get the date of one of the comics in my photos dated March 4, 1967, and oddly enough there were old toy cars in front of the comics that were about the same age.

“I found that really quite sad because a wedding photo in particular is one of someone’s most prized possessions to remember their special day but now it sits silently and is left behind for whatever reason the old couple leave the property Has.”

Pictures taken by Kyle show the cracked walls inside the property, with dozens of items — including an extremely old television — lying on the floor in some rooms.

In one bedroom, three paintings are laid out on the bed, while a picture of a man in army uniform and a separate picture of a woman balance upright against a wall.

In the bathroom, what appears to be clothing has been thrown into the bathtub, although a towel and bar of soap can be seen near the sink.

In one of the bedrooms, an old doll sits on a dresser, while paint pots, vases and old tools lie neglected in another area of the house.

A dusty chimney and an old yellow telephone appear to have not been touched in years, and a large world map taped to one of the walls is beginning to peel off.

“The property is quite modern so it must have only been vacated in the last 10 years, but the contents and memories left behind were just overwhelming,” said Kyle.

Kyle is drawn to abandoned 20th-century buildings, especially houses that seem to have been vacated suddenly, leaving many mysteries behind.

The clandestine photographer sometimes discovers pictures on Facebook before heading out to explore on his own.
