Instagram has decided to officially ward off allegations.

“We saw a meme about Instagram using ‘precise location,'” the company tweeted.

“To be clear, we don’t share your location with anyone else.

“Similar to other social media companies, we use precise location for things like location tags and map features.

“People can manage location services through their device settings and tag locations in their posts if they want to share that information.”

Instagram CEO Adam Mosseri added: “Location Services is a device setting on your phone, not a new feature from Instagram, and it supports things like location tags.

“We don’t share your location with anyone else.”

What is the exact location on iPhone and Instagram?

Precise location basically gives apps a clearer view of where you are.

This is pretty important for things like Google Maps if you want guided navigation.

Other apps like Instagram have it if you tag your location in posts.

In this way you can, for example, get a more precise location of the fancy restaurant you are in.

But you have to actively choose it yourself – Instagram doesn’t just do that for you with everything you share.
