Internet sensation walrus Freya may need to be put down as fans stress her out too much

A “stressed” celebrity walrus will be bagged unless hordes of gaping fans stop gathering to snap photos and videos of the marine mammal.

He rose to fame in Norway after sunbathing in an Oslo fjord and being admired on social media for her habit of hoisting her 1,300-pound body onto nearby boats.

Norwegians in love have named her Freya after the Norse goddess of love, fight, sex and death, but her fame may now have a deadly downside. Her adoring audience has consistently ignored orders from authorities to give her a wide berth.

Instead, mobs have gathered near Freya, who first appeared in Norwegian waters last month, to watch and film her on their smartphones and then post the results online.

The Norwegian Directorate of Fisheries has warned they are considering euthanizing Freya because she is stressed out by the attention and could throw up.

“The public’s reckless behavior and failure to heed authorities’ recommendations could put lives at risk,” said spokeswoman Nadia Jdaini.

Walruses are usually slow to anger, but the endangered species, which typically lives in the arctic, can attack humans if they feel threatened.

The marine mammals, which feed on fish, shellfish and molluscs, need long naps and can sleep up to 20 hours a day.

Ms Jdaini added: “Her health has clearly deteriorated. The walrus gets too little rest and the experts we interviewed now suspect that the animal is stressed. We are now considering other measures and euthanasia could be a viable alternative.” (© Telegraph Media Group Ltd. 2022) Internet sensation walrus Freya may need to be put down as fans stress her out too much
