New WoW expansion – what you need to know

World of Warcraft was launched in 2004 and was an instant hit.

The legendary MMORPG remains one of the greatest games in the world.

Part of this success is due to the fact that expansion packs are released about every two years.

We have had eight so farand a ninth is due out sometime in 2022.

This new Dragonflight expansion marks World of Warcraft’s 10.0 update and is expected to be completed 20 years after the original game’s launch, so expectations are high.

WoW Dragonflight: What to Expect from the New World of Warcraft Expansion

World of Warcraft’s major expansion, the Dragonflight expansion, is a new zone.

Aptly named the Dragon Isles, it features four new zones: the Waking Coast, the Plains of Ohn’ahran, the Azure Span, and Thaldraszus.

You’ll travel to the new land by boat, and there’s even a faction-based PVP element along the way.

In the last zone is a central hub of the city called Valdrakken with an auction house, libraries and gardens.

“We are entering this time of renewal – the life energies of Azeroth are rising once again,” said Steve Danseur, Lead Narrative Designer at Dragonflight.

“The Land of the Dragon Isles was dormant, and now it is awakening again.

“It called the dragons home, but it also calls old adversaries.”

He added: “It’s definitely one of the larger expansions in terms of landmass.

“There’s more space than in the Shadowlands.”

For the first time in WoW history, there is a new race and class rolled into one – the Dractyr Evoker.

Dractyr can only play as Evokers and Evokers can only play as Dractyrs.

It’s a hero class that starts at level 58 (with its own starting zone) – and can be either Alliance or Horde.

You can play as a damage dealer (Havoc) or healer (Conservation).

And there’s a new type of spell called Empower that works by holding down a button to activate it – resulting in greater potency.

“In combat, you’re mostly in Dractyr form,” said Brian Holinka, Lead Combat Designer at Dragonflight.

“The face shape is for ‘Hey, I’m a dragon and I’ve moved into a more familiar state that isn’t that scary to humans.’

“And maybe I’ll go in visa form and maybe mobs will attack me less – but we’re still experimenting with that.

“Right now it’s important to do that dragon fantasy: fly around, breathe fire, hit people with your tail, blow people back with your wings.

“In social situations, you can decide what shape you are in.”

There is a new flight-like skill called Dragon Riding.

It’s a bit like regular flying, but it’s a skill you level up over time – so you can fly higher and explore the Dragon Isles.

You can customize your Drake mount with items, including special armor.

Longtime players will be delighted to hear that the UI and HUD are getting a major overhaul.

It has remained largely unchanged over the years, but will now look significantly more modern.

Talents are getting an overhaul to restore some of the point-based attribution that was removed with Mists of Pandora.

You now have a class tree and a specification tree to spend points on.

“There are more ways to customize and mix and match,” Brian told The Sun.

“We have set ourselves the goal of creating a wide range of choices and balancing them well.

“To make players feel like they can make the choices they want – and not hold their party back.”

Professions will also be updated to make them feel more rewarding.

This includes the addition of crafting orders, which allow you to request crafted goods from other players.

And items now have quality, which affects their ilvl.

Crafters also receive new and specific gear for their professions, which you trade in as you craft.

This gear provides special stats for your profession and doesn’t take up valuable space in your bag.

Plot-wise, the expansion’s main enemies remain mysterious – but we do get some clues.

“The Djaradin – they are these half-elemental half-giants imbued with the power of flames that shape magma into armor and weapons,” Steve told The Sun.

“They are ancient enemies of dragons, hunted dragons and especially hated the black dragonflight.

“So the Djaradin have also awakened and will challenge the dragons for part of their lands.”

Players can expect to interact with classic Warcraft characters like Alexstrasza, Wrathion, and Kalygos.

We expect to hear more about the Dragonflight expansion, including a release date, in the coming months.
