Interview: Chat with Community Manager Roxanne (Roxx) Sabo about Lost Ark

To say my PAX East trip was packed is an understatement. My third and final interview at the packed event was with the community manager at Lost Ark, Roxanne Sabo, also known as Roxx! This was a very healthy and relaxed interview and it was so much fun getting to know her as a person and as a player!

Anthony with MMORPG.com: I’m here with the person who will fix everything. Roxx, our community manager. How are you today?Roxanne Sabo “Roxx”, Lost Ark Community Manager: It’s kind of crazy being at PAX East, 2020 was the last event I’ve attended before. So I’m really excited to be back, especially for the first show. It’s really nice to see people again. It feels like things are sort of getting back to normal and I’m really looking forward to more shows being a part of my life again.

MMORPG: I want to start at the beginning. How did you find out about Lost Ark?

Roxx: So I actually found out about the game when most new players in the West did. When Amazon announced it, I came up with the project. I had previously worked as a community manager on other MMOs. When this job came up, I thought, “This seems like a really cool opportunity.” and I had never heard of Lost Ark. But I looked at it, I checked what I could, and I thought that seems cool to be a part of. I was very fortunate to have this opportunity to pull it off. Once I started playing the game oh man. Lost Ark brought me to Lost Ark! So I have to start experiencing it. You know, it’s still being developed for the West. But as soon as I started playing I thought; I’m so glad I made this jump. The game is beautiful, the world is beautiful, there is so much polish, so much love that the team put into it. I thought, ‘I can’t believe I get to be a part of this.’

MMORPG: That’s how I experienced it! I found out from one of our streamers in the community, Saintone. I saw it and fell in love immediately. I say, “This is what I want to play!” and I think a lot of us in our community have played multiple MMOs, but this one is just different. As you said the world is so beautiful, everything about it from sailing to combat to life skills. All!

Roxx: See, personally I know there are a lot of people who play Lost Ark who are super hardcore, love the grind and love a challenge. I like the RPG aspect the most. Lost Ark definitely has it. Going through the story and everything, that’s the kind of stuff I love and look for in games, not even as a job. Just things I play and enjoy. So I was very excited to discover so much of it when I started.

MMORPG: It’s also super interesting because I definitely lean towards the hardcore side of things and admittedly when I first started playing Lost Ark I didn’t really care much about the story until I did the castle siege! I saw that and said ‘Oh, I should pay attention to that!’ We all know that a piece sliding down the chain is all in slow motion. Like, that’s so cool! That’s when I started appreciating the world as a whole much more.

Roxx: It’s definitely still my favorite part. I feel like it clicked for a lot of players.

MMORPG: Speaking of excitement, let’s move on to the days leading up to launch. The anticipation is building, we’ve been through a beta, through ups and downs, the hype, it’s gained popularity. I know my playgroup was huge hype. Walk me through this if you can; how things felt from your point of view as a player and community manager.

Roxx: I believe in the weeks before that you mentioned our beta. Beta went great, super good. Honestly, the few weeks before felt almost like the calm before the storm because we were doing everything we could to prepare, but at this point you’re right around the corner from launch. Pretty good to go, hopefully. So there was a lot of anticipation, started ramping up the work a bit and said, ‘Okay, okay, it’s almost there. It’s almost there’. Just hold on like oh my god The moment it released it was like “Finally!” I think more so than any other game I’ve worked on just because it’s been out in other areas for so long. I have a feeling it felt even more like it. We can watch others play, we can see it, we can see all the content. And it just helped reinforce that for sure. So it was very interesting to sit on something that other people have played and experienced. I had learned to play and experience how I am inside and learned the game. The anticipation was great. Then once it was out it was like ‘oh my god we did it’. I thought it was incredible, a great experience. We were pretty happy with some of the numbers. And not even the first week. Every day was super exciting.

MMORPG: It’s like opening a Christmas present and knowing what it is, but you’re still excited!

Roxx: Total. It’s also different than launching a brand new game because you already know that so many people love this thing. It’s almost like having something tried and tested. Now a whole new different group is getting to experience it.

MMORPG: I definitely didn’t sleep the days after! I’ve played so much! I’m sure there have been troubled days on your side. On the broader side of things, how do you manage to balance your work, life and free time?

Roxx: I think it’s definitely a challenge, especially when you’re working on something as big as an MMO. It’s a live service game, right? We’re still updating, and we have weekly updates, all that jazz. It’s definitely a challenge. It becomes such an integral part of your life. I have my twitter. I’m too excited not to have my personal Twitter and engage with gamers. It’s like that all the time when you’re having dinner, like, ‘Oh, someone tweeted me something, I want to reply!’ I had to kind of set boundaries so I wouldn’t get too crazy or burn out because that’s definitely something you could do.

There’s more and more to do, more and more people to talk to, more and more questions to answer. Another thing that’s also kind of funny, especially for the first few weeks, is that I’m really enjoying Lost Ark as a player as well, so I’d finish at work and it’d be like, ‘Okay, I have to take a break and shut up Eat supper, and after supper, what shall I do?’ Well, now I just want to play Lost Ark! There are times when I have to say, “No, Roxanne! Do not do that!’. You have to spend tomorrow working on it, although I really want to play. So it’s definitely something I kind of had to push through with myself. But then again, this week here at PAX, it also has that work-and-play balance. So there are definitely ways to do this. Like I said, I’m so happy to be here. It’s a bit different than my everyday life at my desk, but I can still get other elements of my work done. It’s so easy to be on all the time when working on a project like this. And I definitely had to learn to withdraw, especially in the first few weeks.

MMORPG: What class did you start with?

Roxx: I ended up starting with Sorceress. I played a summoner in beta…

MMORPG: Oh no!Roxx: I know a lot of people are expecting it, and I definitely am too, but I ended up switching to Sorceress. I’m not crazy hardcore so I made them look super icy and cool. For the PVE stuff, I’ve been going through the story and I’m like, “I’m going to give her a little ice set for roleplay.”

MMORPG: As you said, our community is huge. We have so many people that just play and love the game. We’ve seen everything from player character fanart to entire communities coming together for a great game like this. What has been the most pleasant surprise for you as a CM so far?Roxx: I didn’t think of that, but you mentioned fanart. For me personally, as a person and a player who likes things like that. I definitely love seeing all the fanart because it’s such an eclectic cast of interesting characters. So it sure was super fun to see the fanart. In terms of what surprised me about the community, I really enjoyed it, and you said earlier that Lost Ark is huge. There are so many different systems, but there are also people who have been playing it on the Russian servers for ages, you know, it’s been out in other places in the world for a few years, we’ve had so much time to learn so much other people join. And between the guides on Reddit and on Twitter, there are so many of these players so engaged and so willing to answer questions and offer tips. Sometimes people get competitive, and that’s part of MMOs, which is totally fine. But I feel like I’m in the Lost Ark community a lot more often, it’s like, ‘Hey, I can send you all these really awesome guides. This is where you should go, or I can probably answer any questions.’ And I see that from players all the time, and it makes me super happy. Because we have so many old vets and so many new players. It’s a super interesting mix of a player base. It’s definitely not something I’ve experienced. It was really great to see all these hardcore players helping the community all the time no matter what it is.

MMORPG: one last, final Question… And this one is very important. How many Makoko seeds do you have?Roxx: Oh my God! live? I got pretty far on the QA server. Live I think I’m around 40.

MMORPG: That’s better than me! I have… 21!

I appreciate everything you do for this community. You’ve been such a great community manager and on behalf of the Lost Ark community, thank you!Roxx: Thanks for the invitation! I’m honestly blown away by how many members of the community have supported me. MMOs are crazy, with huge numbers of players. Like I said I didn’t know anything about Lost Ark until I was hired to work on the game and sometimes I think “some of you guys are going to know a lot more than I do!” and the fact that everyone is so cool are it…I’m doing my best for you all and they’re very welcoming and inviting and it’s really nice.
