Popular TV show Gladiators will return to the BBC next year, it has been announced.
his show will return with an 11-episode series and will welcome a new generation of “superheroes” who will compete with contestants in the “ultimate test of speed and strength”, BBC said.
The series, which will be broadcast on BBC One and BBC iPlayer, will feature new games alongside classic challenges – with each episode ending with an extreme obstacle course and fan favourite. The Eliminator.
At its peak, Gladiators – which aired from 1992 to 2000 – drew large audiences to ITV on Saturday nights as it famously called “Contenders Ready? Gladiators Ready?” echoed across the TV screens.
Names like Trojan, Jet, Nightshade and Hunter have become household names, and this format – which originated in the US – has reached Australia, South Africa, Russia, Finland, Germany, Nigeria, Denmark and Sweden .
When it returned to Sky, which aired from 2008-2009, Kirsty Gallacher and Ian Wright took over hosting duties from original hosts John Fashanu and Ulrika Jonsson – with original referee John Anderson also returning to revive Sky.
TV presenter Jonsson, 55, rose to fame as a TV weatherwoman in the late ’80s, with Fighter make her even more famous star.
The BBC has yet to announce who will host the return show, but filming will take place at Utilita Arena Sheffield next year.
Kate Phillips, BBC’s non-editorial director, said: “Fighter is back and a whole new generation of viewers can now look forward to seeing a Saturday night spectacle like no other.

The series will be produced by Hungry Bear Media and MGM Television UK, with Scot Cru, MGM Television’s executive vice president of global format and Undescripted Content, saying:Fighter is a format that resonates with viewers around the world.
“We are delighted to bring this venerable series to the BBC and can’t wait to feature our UK Gladiators.”
