What is iOS 16 for iPhone?

Every year Apple releases a major new update for iPhone models.

They introduce brand new features—and fix longstanding issues—for free.

We first heard about iOS 16 at Apple’s WWDC event in June, but it’s finally here.

It changes lock screen significantly, lets you reset iMessages for the very first time, and more.

iOS 16 release date and time – when will the iPhone update be available?

Apple confirmed the release date of iOS 16 at last week’s special Far Out event for the iPhone 14, iPhone 14 Pro, Apple Watch Ultra and the new AirPods Pro.

It will be released on Monday September 12th.

Unfortunately, Apple hasn’t confirmed the exact timing, but we have an idea based on previous rollouts.

We typically expect an iOS update to go live sometime around 10am in California, 1pm in New York and 6pm in the UK.

But like all rollouts, it may take an hour or two (or longer!) to arrive on your iPhone.

So keep your eyes peeled, but at least it should definitely be available by Tuesday 13th September.

To check, go to Settings > General > Software Update on your iPhone.

iOS 16 update features – new iPhone tricks revealed

Change #1 – Lock Screen

Apple is completely changing the lock screen, allowing you to customize presets or create your own.

You can also take advantage of Live Activity, a new feature that tracks events in real time.

It can be a workout, sports scores, your cab ride, or a food delivery order—all from the lock screen.

Finally there’s a new design where notifications roll up from the bottom of the display, giving you the best possible view of the lock screen.

Change #2 – Blocking photo albums

In case you haven’t noticed, you can hide iPhone photos – by putting them in a hidden folder.

However, this hidden folder is easy to find (or recover if you hid the folder yourself).

Luckily, iOS 16 protects your hidden and recently deleted folders on iPhone with a password.

That means you have to use Face ID to gain access to them and protect them from snoopers who might be using your iPhone.

Change #3 – Sending and editing iMessages

Your messaging app finally lets you “unsend” iMessages.

This means that if you regret sending the text message, the recipient’s phone will call you back.

And you can even edit text to fix typos or other errors quickly and easily.

Importantly, this feature only works properly if the recipient is also using iOS 16 – so be careful for the first few weeks.

Change #4 – Pin Safari Tabs

If you’re an iPhone power user, you probably have hundreds of Safari tabs open.

This can make it difficult to find the tabs you use most often.

Luckily, iOS 16 lets you pin your favorite tabs in Safari so you never lose track of what matters most again.

Can I install iOS 16?

The sad reality is that not all iPhone models can upgrade to iOS 16.

You need an iPhone 8 or later to get the new iOS 16.

That means two iPhone generations have been cut off: the iPhone 6S and the iPhone 7.

The 1st gen iPhone SE also won’t be compatible with iOS 16, but it was with iOS 15.5.

Here is the full list of devices supported by iOS 16:

  • iPhone 13
  • iPhone 13 mini
  • iPhone 13 pro
  • iPhone 13 Pro max
  • iphone 12
  • iPhone 12 mini
  • iPhone 12 pro
  • iPhone 12 pro max
  • iPhone 11
  • iPhone 11 pro
  • iPhone 11 Pro max
  • iPhone XS
  • iPhone XS Max
  • iPhone XR
  • iPhone X
  • iPhone 8
  • iPhone 8plus
  • iPhone SE (2nd generation or newer)

If you’re using an older iPhone, you simply need to upgrade to access iOS 16.

Otherwise you will miss the new features.

But what’s even more worrying is that if you’re unable to get the latest iOS, you’ll lose access to the latest security fixes.

These are critical patches that close vulnerabilities used by hackers to gain access to your systems.

Andrew is set to leave the Queen's three corgis as the fate of the beloved pets is confirmed

So using a very old iPhone that cannot be updated could put you at risk.

If you can’t update to iOS 16, you’d better update your iPhone sooner rather than later.
