IPHONE owners will soon be able to use a new “extreme” lockdown mode to prevent being spied on.
However, Apple warns that the security boost will result in some features being restricted.
Your iPhone will not function normally once lockdown mode is active.
Apps, websites and features will be “strictly restricted” for security reasons, while some experiences will be “completely unavailable”.
The robust new feature is designed to keep sophisticated hackers out if you have reason to believe you’re being attacked.
It is intended to prevent “private companies from developing state-sponsored mercenary spyware”.
Apple specifically pointed the finger at Israeli cyber company NSO Group, whose infamous Pegasus spyware was allegedly used to spy on politicians, journalists and activists.
With blocking mode enabled, most message attachments except images are blocked.
Things like link previews don’t work either.
FaceTime calls from unknown users will also be blocked.

And you can’t even connect your iPhone to a computer or accessory.
Apple describes the mode as an “extreme” option that most people won’t need.
But when they do, it will be available in the upcoming iOS update.
iOS 16 is slated to land sometime in the fall.
“Apple makes the most secure mobile devices on the market. Lockdown mode is a game-changing feature that reflects our unwavering commitment to protecting users from even the rarest and most sophisticated attacks,” said Ivan Krstić, Apple’s director of security engineering and architecture.
“While the vast majority of users will never fall victim to targeted cyberattacks, we will work tirelessly to protect the small number of users that are.
“This includes continuing to develop defenses specifically for these users, as well as supporting researchers and organizations around the world who are doing the vital work to uncover the mercenary companies creating these digital attacks.”
