iPhone owners get a huge free upgrade — and it’s amazing if you like YouTube

YOUTUBE fans are getting a huge free iPhone upgrade this week.

Google is now introducing a picture-in-picture mode for iOS and iPadOS.

You can watch YouTube videos in a floating window on iPhone

That means you can watch videos in a floating window on iPhone or iPad.

This also applies if you use other apps.

If you’re using the latest version of iOS – that’s iOS 15 – you should see this feature this week.

To check, go to Settings > General > Software update.

If you don’t see it, don’t panic – tech rollouts can sometimes take a bit of time.

It’s only available in the US at first, but it’s set to become more widely available in the future.

And anyone who pays for YouTube Premium already has this feature — even if they live outside the US.

However, there is a big catch.

YouTube Premium members are allowed to watch music content with picture-in-picture, but free users can’t.

That means you can’t bind your Spotify membership just yet unless you pay for YouTube Premium.

Android users have of course had this feature for years.

“It’s happening! Picture-in-Picture is slowly rolling out for YouTube on iPhone and iPad,” Google said on its YouTube account for Twitter.

“And just like Android, it will be available to premium members worldwide and non-premium members in the US (non-music only).”

“It was foreseeable for a long time.”

You should make sure you have updated your YouTube app to the latest version on Apple’s App Store.

Then go to the YouTube app and start playing a video.

If you exit the YouTube app while the video is playing, the video should automatically appear as a floating window.

Not seeing it could mean a number of things.

Either you’re not in the right country, the launch hasn’t arrived on your device yet, or you’re trying to play music content that’s not allowed as a free YouTube member.

Another way to look for the feature is to go into your YouTube settings, look for the General tab, and then see if the picture-in-picture switch is active.
