An Iranian rocket scientist who worked on developing top-secret missiles and drones has died under mysterious circumstances.

According to reports, Dr. Ayoob Entezari before his death on May 31 at a research and development center in the city of Yazd in central Iran.

Initial reports suggest he died of food poisoning, but local authorities denied this, saying he died of an unspecified illness and accused “one of his relatives” of seeking fame after 15 minutes by showing him spread a “rumor online”.

On Sunday, opposition newspaper Iran International, Dr. Entezari was deliberately poisoned by an acquaintance at dinner.

The outlet also cited unnamed sources who claimed that the man who hosted the fatal dinner party has since fled the country.

The governor-general’s office in Yazd province issued Entezari’s family a certificate confirming his “martyrdom,” leading the provincial judicial authorities to refute this, saying Entezari was “an ordinary employee of an industrial company” who was “at died of an illness”.

The governor-general’s office now says the deed’s designation of Entezari as a “martyr” was “a public relations office error” and has been “corrected.”

They continued: “The cause of Mr. Entezari’s death is under investigation and the result is not yet known.”

Before his death, Dr. Entezari have been working on new missiles and drones at a research and development center in the provincial capital Yazd.

The scientist received his doctorate in mechanical engineering and aerospace engineering from the Sharif University of Technology in Tehran.

The mysterious incident came just a day after the Islamic Republic also announced the death of a commander of Iran’s elite Kuds Force.

The unit is part of the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps and is responsible for overseas operations, and the colonel’s death was the second in the same unit in just two weeks.

The official IRNA news agency said Colonel Ali Esmailzadeh died in an “incident at his residence” in the town of Karaj, some 30 kilometers northwest of the capital Tehran.

The Iranian government and IRGC media gave no specific details about Esmailzadeh’s death after Iran International quoted sources inside Iran as saying the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps had killed him on suspicion of espionage.

Revolutionary Guards officials told Esmailzadeh’s family that his death was a suicide.

He was a close colleague of Colonel Hassan Sayyad-Khodaei, acting commander of the elite Qods 840 force, who was shot dead in his car outside his home in Tehran on May 22 by two gunmen fleeing the scene on a motorcycle.
