One of the UK’s biggest Mexican fast-food chains said Ireland could be a “good location” for potential European expansion.
Ichard Morris, chief executive of Tortilla Mexican Grill Plc, which is listed on London’s AIM Stock Exchange, offered his thoughts on possible European expansion during talks with analysts.
Headquartered in London, Tortilla had 68 locations worldwide, mostly in the UK but also in the Middle East. The company was founded in 2007 and employs almost 1,000 people.
When asked where tortilla might end up in the EU market, Morris replied, “I don’t think we can probably tell yet, but we’ve been looking at different ones.
“There are certain, I mean Ireland is good. Holland is good. Spain is good. Germany is good.
“These are the ones that probably stand out as the most achievable.”
In addition to commenting on potential expansion into Ireland, the Sunday Independent understands Tortilla has also been looking at possible opportunities in Belfast city center and a suitable site has become available.
The company is understood to be pursuing the site, which will require the issuance of planning permission from the local authority.
In a filing accompanying the findings, Tortilla said the company is evaluating the possibility of expanding into Europe in the medium term.
