Ireland get a new Rugby World Cup opponent while Spain are replaced by Romania after fielding an ineligible player

Spain were banned from next year’s World Cup for fielding an ineligible player in qualifying.

The sanction of a 10-point deduction from Rugby Euro Championship means their place in Pool B is taken by Romania.

The independent committee adjudicating the case deducted five points from every game in which South African prop Gavin van den Berg appeared, as well as a £25,000 fine.

Spain, who have a right of appeal, met a similar fate ahead of the last World Cup, blaming a fake Van den Berg passport for the blunder.

Spain should be represented in Ireland’s World Cup pool along with South Africa, Scotland and a team from the Asia/Pacific region. Andy Farrell’s side now face Romania, who they also played against in the 2015 tournament.
