Ireland is second in the medals table for host nation Turkey at the Women’s World Boxing Championships

Ireland finished second in the medal table behind host country Turkey at the Women’s World Boxing Championships in Istanbul.
t is a tradition in boxing that the host country enjoyed a huge medal leap, although eyebrows are raised because the five Turkish boxers who competed in the final all won.
Turkey also won two bronze medals and, as expected, finished first in the table.
Thanks to the exploits of Amy Broadcast and Lisa O’Rourke, the youngest female boxer to win a gold medal, Ireland finished an incredible second place to all of the sport’s superpowers.
Ireland and Turkey were the only countries to win more than one gold medal at the tournament. Canada, India, Mozambique, the US, Chinese Taipei (Taiwan) and Lithuania were the only other countries to secure gold.
Ireland’s performance is all the more remarkable given that Olympic champion Kellie Harrington, a former gold and bronze medalist at this level, had to withdraw through injury.
The next Women’s World Cup in 2023 is in Tashkent, Uzbekistan.
