SECTIONS of Ireland will experience sleet tomorrow while torrential downpours will pelt the country today.

The Met Eireann said there will be light rain and drizzle in western parts of the country and will be heavier in the afternoon.

The National Weather Service also said Munster and Leinster would remain mostly dry until late into the night.

The Met Eireann said: “There is a chance there will be some morning spells this morning, but overall it will be cloudy today.

“Mainly dry in the morning and afternoon, apart from a few spots of light rain and drizzle, mainly in the west.

“In the late afternoon and evening, a band of heavy and persistent rain will spread from the northwest, although much of Leinster and Munster will be mostly dry through the night.

“A clearance will enter the northwest before the end of the day.”

The Met Eireann said it will be windy across the country and will turn out to be “strong and gusty at times”.

Expected through tonight, the Met Eireann said heavy rain across the country and said snow was also possible in Ulster, warning of the possibility of thunderstorms.

They said: “The heavy and persistent band of rain will continue to the southeast, followed by cold clear weather, and that rainfall will soon reach the southeast after midnight.

“It’s windy at first, but it will shift from west to northwest and reduce light to a moderate level away from the west and north coasts.

“Scattered showers are also expected, mainly to the west and northwest, with some hail and some sleet later, with the possibility of some snowfall mainly over higher ground in Ulster .

“Several individual thunderstorms are also likely in northern areas.”

The Met Eireann added: “Tomorrow, Friday, will be a cold, bright, sunny day with showers, occasional heavy rain and hail; with showers most widespread in Northern regions.

“Some sleet is likely for a while in Ulster, particularly on higher ground.
