Irish AMT coffee shops sold to SSP led by Patrick Coveney

UK-based AMT coffee chain, which operated nine stores in Ireland, has been sold to London-listed SSP Group, of which Patrick Coveney is a managing director.

na pre-pack administration, struggling AMT was sold to SSP on Friday. The SSP Group takes over 25 of the AMT sites, including seven out of nine sites in Ireland.

The stores in Dún Laoghaire and Bray will not be taken over and 18 stores in the UK will also be closed. About 100 employees, including those at AMT headquarters, will lose their jobs.

Mr Coveney is the former CEO of Irish food group Greencore. He took up his new role at SSP in March of this year.

SSP owns the Upper Crust sandwich chain in the UK and operates in a number of international markets.

It focuses primarily on the travel sector, with offices at airports and train stations serving a number of major travel hubs. It operates brands such as M&S Simply Food, Starbucks and Burger King under franchise agreements. It operates various branches at Dublin Airport.

In Ireland, the AMT Coffee Outlets acquired by the SSP Group are located at Dublin Airport, Cork Airport, Heuston Station, Connolly Station, Cork Kent Station, Limerick Colbert Station and Dublin Pearse Street Station.

AMT sites will continue to operate under the AMT brand.

AMT units in Ireland generated sales of £1.3m (€1.5m) in 2020, up from £5.1m in the previous financial year when business was hit by the pandemic.

Interpath Advisory’s Nick Holloway and Will Wright were appointed joint administrators of AMT Coffee and immediately upon their appointment, AMT’s business and assets were sold to SSP.
