Irish Esther Lynch is elected General Secretary of the European Trade Union Confederation

Irish Esther Lynch was elected General Secretary of the European Trade Union Confederation (ETUC) this afternoon in Brussels.

A former Irish Trades Union Congress official, she has extensive trade union experience at Irish, European and international level, dating back to her election to works council in the 1980s.

Ms Lynch was elected Deputy ETUC General Secretary at the Vienna Congress in May 2019, after four years as Confederation Secretary.

Her responsibilities at the ETUC now include social dialogue, collective bargaining and wage policy, trade union rights, gender equality and Brexit.

Before joining the ETUC, Ms Lynch was the Legislative and Social Affairs Officer at the Irish Trades Union Congress (ICTU) where she participated in the negotiation of Ireland’s national social partner agreements.

Ictu General Secretary Owen Reidy congratulated Ms Lynch and said it was “a proud day for the Irish trade union movement” before adding: “Now more than ever we need strong voices to fight for and protect the rights of European workers in the EU.” -Decision making.

“I wish Esther all the best in taking on her new responsibilities and I assure her of Ictu’s full support.”

The ETUC represents over 45 million members from 93 trade union organizations in 41 European countries and 10 European trade union federations.
