Irish independent writers shortlisted at Headline Mental Health Media Awards

Irish independent journalists have been shortlisted for their work on mental health issues for the annual Headline Media Awards

Hane Phelan, Dawn O’Shea and Micheál Costello are all shortlisted for awards at the 2022 Mental Health Media Awards.

Mr. Phelan’s work on the controversy at the South Kerry Child and Adolescent Mental Health Service (CAMHS) is listed in the National Print/Online category.

His story focused on a counselor who claimed he was “put out of the way” after he highlighted prescription issues at a mental health service.

Dawn O’Shea is nominated for two awards for writing about her lifelong struggle with depression and anxiety.

“You can’t get away if your culprit is your own mind,” published in the Irish Independent, is nominated in the National Print/Online category.

It is also nominated for a Special Recognition award, which goes to a person who tells their story in their own words to help and enlighten a wider audience.

Micheál Costello was shortlisted for the same award for Without My Anorexia, Who Am I? those presented in the Irish Independent.

In the Local Print/Online section, Tadhg Evans is nominated for a play he has written The Kerryman: “I don’t like reporting on investigations, but that’s why I do it.”

Established over a decade ago and newly launched in 2019, the awards recognize excellence in media coverage of mental health issues and recognize those whose work brings challenging mental health stories to light.

The shortlists in nine categories include nominees from all broadcast and print media including RTÉ, Virgin Media, Newstalk, The Irish Time, The Irish Examiner The and more.

Áine O’Meara, director of headline programming, said; “The volume and variety of nominations received is a testament to the increased visibility and portrayal of mental health that we have seen in the Irish media over the past year.”
