Irish mountaineer dies while climbing the Matterhorn in Switzerland

An Irish climber has died after an accident while attempting to scale Switzerland’s famous Matterhorn.

nthony Ryan, originally from Drimnagh on Dublin’s south side but who had been living in London, was killed along with a guide when debris fell as they neared the summit of one of Europe’s most dangerous mountains.

Mr Ryan and his guide are believed to have been killed in late July as they neared the summit of the Matterhorn. The full details of how he and his guide died are not yet known.

The State Department confirmed that it was aware of Mr Ryan’s death and was providing consular assistance to his family.

“As with all consular cases, the department does not comment on the details of a specific case,” a department spokesman said.

An obituary from Mr Ryan states that he formerly resided at Morne Road, Dublin 12, while recently residing at Marlborough Road, London.

“Beloved son of Anthony and the late Stephanie and loving brother of Alan, Gillian, David and Stephanie,” the statement said. “He will be greatly missed by his father, partner Bonita, brothers, sisters, his aunt Patty, brothers and sisters-in-law, aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews, relatives and friends.”

Mr Ryan’s funeral details have not yet been confirmed.

This summer there were numerous deaths while climbing in the Swiss Alps, two more people died on the Matterhorn in early July.

In the past few weeks to ten days, guides have refused to operate tours in many Swiss Alps, including the Matterhorn, due to exceptionally hot weather. This is reportedly the first time this has happened in a century. Authorities have also opted to close mountain huts, cancel guided tours and urge climbers not to go alone due to the treacherous conditions, as melting glaciers become dangerous for climbers.

It is estimated that over 500 people have lost their lives on the Matterhorn, making it one of the deadliest mountains in the world. About eight to ten people die climbing the mountain every year. Irish mountaineer dies while climbing the Matterhorn in Switzerland
