Irish novelist Claire Keegan may not have won the Booker Prize, but her little book made a big impression

Shehan Karunatilaka, winner of the 2022 Booker Prize, began planning how to tell the brutal horrors of Sri Lanka’s civil war through fiction over a decade ago.

He said he gradually realized he needed a magical-realistic presentation because “only the dead could offer plausible explanations for the tragedy in Sri Lanka, while the living clearly had no idea”.
