Dublin’s longest-serving tour operator to Russia, John Galligan Tours, has joined the Russian boycott by canceling all trips to the country.
The decision was taken in protest of “the murder and havoc the Russian government has wreaked on innocent people in Ukraine,” John Galligan said in a statement this afternoon.
Mr Galligan said his company had offered weekly sailings to Russia since the 1980s but said the crisis between Russia and Ukraine could no longer be ignored.
Earlier this week, the company informed its Russian suppliers that all tours planned for the foreseeable future have been cancelled.
“Over the years we have come to know the Russian people and appreciate them very much. It is unfortunate that this decision had to be made as we have a long history with Russia. Since the beginning of our tours we have successfully separated our travel agency from politics but we feel this invasion cannot be ignored,” said Mr Galligan.
He acknowledged that his decision alone is unlikely to worry Vladimir Putin or the Russian government, but he said if everyone made smaller similar decisions it would make a difference.
“We know that the Russian government will not be the least bit concerned about JGT canceling its Irish programme, but we feel compelled to register our protest at the murder and chaos the Russian government is inflicting on the innocent people of the Ukraine has unleashed,” he said.
“Our protest may be small and insignificant, but if everyone around the world makes similar tiny gestures, Russia will definitely start feeling the pinch.”
Companies worldwide have turned their backs on Russia, including Apple, Maersk, Visa, Mastercard, Nike, Boeing and many others.
The Moscow Stock Exchange was closed this week as sanctions begin to cripple Russia’s economy as the ruble has lost nearly a third of its value over the past two weeks.
Business has ostracized Russia and many SOEs and wealthy oligarchs.
