“Irresponsible” gambling ads banned by Coral and Wolf Gold

One of these was for bookmaker Coral, which featured excited spectators at a horse race accompanied by a dramatic soundtrack.

The television spot, aired in March, featured stylized footage of a hard-fought horse race on a foggy day, including close-ups of spectators mesmerized by events on the track and dramatic music.

One voiceover said: “Exciting isn’t it? When your horse narrowly wins. But if that’s exciting, how about three stadiums ago? Look, look, any horse could win. How about now when your horse is under start command? How long have you waited for these gates to break down? But that’s nothing. And even earlier? Your horse is the only horse that matters. Coral. Get closer to the action.”

Two viewers complained that the ad encouraged socially irresponsible gambling or could result in financial, social or emotional harm.

LC International, trading as Coral, said it wanted the ad to replicate the pre-race expectation that is an inherent characteristic of horse racing and believed it did not depict or encourage gambling behavior in any form.

It further found that the emotions displayed by the ad’s characters did not reflect behavioral indicators of problem gambling.

“Because we believed there was a significant risk that the ad would disproportionately affect a vulnerable group, we concluded that it was socially irresponsible.

“Gaming behavior was depicted, condoned or encouraged that was socially irresponsible or could result in financial, social or emotional harm.”

Display of Wolf Gold also prohibited

In a separate judgment the ASA ruled that an in-app advertisement for a mobile casino game, Wolf Gold, irresponsibly suggested that gambling was a way to solve financial problems and achieve security.

The ad, which ran on the Lucky Night app in May, reads: “Everyone wants to solve their (sic) financial problems… Click the download button now and start earning… With ours, that’s all.” very simple application … pay off loans, buy a car and a nice house … and earn a lot of money! ”

Rank Digital Gaming said it was not involved in the production or publication of the ad and was not aware of it until brought to its attention by the complaint.

rank told the ASA that it raised the issue with the makers of WakeApp and made it clear that the nature of the content was unacceptable and in violation of its own internal policies regarding advertising.

WakeApp tells the ASA that the ad did not comply with their own internal policies and accepted that it violated regulations, but offered no substantive explanation of the process behind its creation or publication.

The ASA said: “The ad must no longer appear in its current form.
