Is Illuvium the First Entertaining Crypto RPG Video Game?

Blockchain games have long been very popular among crypto enthusiasts because of their use of cryptocurrency as an in-game tool.

In this type of games, blockchain technology is used to secure absolute ownership of game items represented by tokens.

For example, by purchasing a non-fungible token (NFT) in-game, a player can be assured of possessing a truly rare item that can be stored and controlled outside of the game. This ownership offers an all-new player-driven economy where players can create their own unique content.

However, crypto games are still far from the old PC or console games in terms of quality and gameplay, perhaps because the world is still wary of blockchain technology itself and unwilling to integrate it into the multi-billion dollar industry. Nevertheless, there has been some progress in this direction.

One of the biggest companies in the gaming industry, Ubisoft, announced plans to bring blockchain technology and non-fungible tokens into games as early as 2021, but no further news has been heard so far. The company too invested in Animoca tokens, triggering a price increase in the latter’s tokens.

Illuvium: A typical NFT game?

In the first quarter of 2022, gamers tested the beta version of Illuvium, which aims to become the first AAA project among decentralized finance (DeFi) games.

Illuvium is an open-world role-playing game (RPG) based on the Ethereum blockchain. The player begins the game in a crashed transport ship of an intergalactic fleet on a dying planet. Due to the accident, the player is unable to leave the planet and discovers mysterious creatures, Illuvials, that can be trapped in crystal fragments.

Each Illuvial has its own characteristics, and creatures are divided into classes and have special abilities. Some illuvials are more common than others. There is a blending mechanism where they can fuse into rarer, more powerful forms or morph into rarer variations. Creatures are presented in the form of NFTs that can be won in-game or purchased on IlluviDEX in-game and on external exchanges.

NFT games tend to look extremely unattractive and are downright boring to play.

Gameplay boils down to collecting NFT items and then trading them for specific tokens. A specific problem with Ethereum games was congestion, which made gameplay very tiring at key moments.

The Illuvium development team aims to solve this problem by integrating the Immutable X Layer-2 protocol. This network greatly improves the performance of Ethereum-based projects.

With Immutable X, the project ensures players can sell their NFT tokens with no fees and instant transactions. NFT assets are stored in the IMX protocol.

Unlike most projects where the game mechanics are just an add-on to token farming, Illuvium looks really interesting. Visually, Illuvium, powered by the Unreal engine, can be compared to big titles like The Outer Worlds or Borderlands.

The game, which can be downloaded for PC, begins with the player customizing a character and choosing a robotic assistant.

Users play not only their Illuvials, but also themselves. The choice of available weapons depends on the character. Weapons can gain additional power with the help of rare minerals.

On the surface of the planet, the player encounters creatures with which he can fight. First, players can use free tools that can tame some weak Illuvials. After a few victories, Illuvials become more powerful and can be strengthened with special items.

Developers give players the opportunity to study gameplay without investment. In the future, to visit new locations in the Illuvium world and open new areas of the map, players will need to unlock the Obelisks and purchase more powerful Illuvials with Ether (ETH).

It’s worth noting that the game’s combat requires thought and strategy from the players so as not to be defeated in a matter of seconds.

Players need to develop strong units that have good synergies with each other. Good armor can also decide the outcome of battle and can be forged from items found on the planet’s surface or purchased from IlluviDEX.

According to Kiernan Warwick, co-founder of the project, combat in Illuvium is a combination of several genres of online games:

“We took the DNA of time-honoured autobattlers like Teamfight Tactics and fused it with competitive strategies like the games Hearthstone and Starcraft. The exciting new mix of the two takes skill and strategy to the absolute limits of addictive gameplay. The focus of our studio is to create interesting, visually enhanced and player-friendly experiences.”

Although many Illuvials have already been developed, the developers want to expand their number and properties. New Illuvials will be released periodically as their rarity increases.

Nowhere without tokens

The game’s native token ILV can be purchased on Binance, KuCoin, Poloniex, Gate.io, and other exchanges. ILV allows holders to participate in the development of the network. Holders of ILVs receive voting rights on the amount of the bonus payments. Game and sales proceeds are distributed 100% to members of the ILV community by default.

The game seems really promising as its audience keeps growing. ILV went on sale in early 2021 at $53 per token and has since surged to $606. according to on data from CoinMarketCap.

Promising future?

Illuvium promises to be an interesting project that can combine an NFT game and a well-designed RPG game. Thoughtful mechanics, rewards and modern graphics could allow him to take a leading position in the industry.

Illuvium is a full 3D game. All the details of the game world are well thought out by the project team.

One of the main strengths of the game is the storyline, which is crucial for any RPG and sets it apart from most crypto games, which mainly focus on token farming.

Another strength is the game’s scaling mechanism, which reportedly allows it to host hundreds of thousands of players around the world. In a “regular” RPG game, users play on different servers to avoid congestion causing lag in gameplay. In Illuvium, developers use a scaling model that includes cloud storage resources that they believe will unify the game’s world.

At the moment, the Illuvium team is focused on marketing and advertising. The game has appeared on the lists of the most anticipated games of the year. The only concern for players is that the developers haven’t finished the game yet, but they hope to start providing an open beta version in mid-2022.
