What is May Day?
May Day is traditionally known as a celebration of spring and nature’s resurrection after the cold winter months.
The celebration dates back to when the Romans celebrated the Festival of Flora – honoring the goddess of fruits and flowers.
People collected flowers, blossoms and twigs to decorate their homes.
Traditionally, women and girls are believed to get up early to wash their faces in the fresh morning dew. This should make her glow, reduce blemishes and attract her future spouse.
In the UK it is also associated with a bank holiday weekend which was formalized under the Labor government in 1978.
Traditional May Day celebrations include morris dancing, maypole dancing and the coronation of a May Queen.
Maypole dancing is a tradition believed to have started in Britain more than 2,000 years ago.
A group of people hold colorful ribbons attached to a pole and weave them around.
The dance creates colorful patterns, which then crawl down the pole, and as an expression of the joy of new life.
