Is Xbox Game Pass Really Worth the Subscription Fee?

WE turn on our Xbox Series console and check out what new games are available on Game Pass.

It’s our job to keep up with the latest game releases, and despite the title, we squinted to remember the games associated with the names before us.

The Xbox community on social media brings the best games into the air. Slime Rancher 2, Persona 5 Royal, and Signalis have all been hugely popular over the past few months.

Going back further, there are a number of standout titles that released on Game Pass on day one.

Tunic, Shredder’s Revenge and Windjammers 2 were all fun and most importantly unforgettable times.

There’s a huge number of fantastic games on Game Pass for a far lower price than what you would pay to play them all.

In terms of value, there’s no question that it’s the best value in gaming.

The thing is, in the real world, you’re not playing all the games you promised yourself.

Looking at the games library, we’re paralyzed by the choice – or lack thereof.

There are many games we tried this year that we wouldn’t have paid full price for. You can dive into multiple Assassin’s Creed entries and the gameplay is often the same.

So many games are picked up and left unfinished. With so much choice, we’ll want to try them all at the expense of reaching the end.

Once we’ve had a chance to try them, our curiosity is sated and we head out to see if there’s anything better.

Aside from the standout third-party games, Xbox has its own first-party titles to add to the list.

Forza Horizon 5 might be the best racing game ever, Halo Infinite isn’t the best Halo game but definitely playable, and Gears 5 was worth looking into with the Hivebusters DLC.

When a great game is released, Xbox Game Pass is indeed the best value gaming experience.

For now, however, Game Pass is in a month-long drought of mediocre titles.

The service fills up with dozens of titles that you would never pay money for. Taking a gamble on a lesser-known but highly-hyped game can leave you with a high like Unpacking or the lows of Twelve Minutes.

Marketed as a shooter set in an HRGiger-style abyss, Scorn turned out to be a Myst with terrifying combat.

If you play any of these releases, you can say you’ve enjoyed them, but when you wonder if you’d recommend them to a friend, you realize you haven’t actually.

So many new releases that you wouldn’t pay for if you saw them in blockbusters, so why are we doing the same thing on Game Pass?

If you delve into older titles, you’ll find treasure like Donut County, but you’ll have to dig into piles of dirt before you get there.

Game Pass is often compared to Netflix, but there’s a key difference here. A film or TV show can be judged by an episode or the opening scene.

Even if you decide to see it through to the end, you’ve only lost two hours. Good luck getting to the first dungeon in Persona 5 Royal during this time.

The truth is we don’t have the time to dive into the Game Pass library, nor the energy to try everything and find this hidden gem.

Worse, when an indie is the standout title of the month, you wonder if you shouldn’t have just bought the game for slightly more than the subscription price.

Despite its flaws, Xbox Game Pass is a truly impressive service, arguably the best value in gaming, but if the latest versions aren’t up to scratch, then neither is the subscription.

The annual price may seem cheaper, but you’ll end up paying more in the long run. Wait a month for a game you really want to try and buy, then clean up anything you’ve missed along the way.
