You can see them on the box of your device as IP codes.

IP stands for Ingress Protection and includes not only liquids but also solid objects (usually dust).

Most cell phones now have some form of protection.

What does the IP classification mean?

An IP rating usually comes with two digits.

The first corresponds to the protection of solid materials.

And the second is about liquids.

The higher the number, the better it holds up.

The code itself is defined by an organization known as the International Electrotechnical Commission.

At the moment solid particle protection ranges from 0, which is zero protection, to 6, known as dustproof.

iPhones after the 6S have a 6 rating.

Liquid protection ranges from 0 – again zero protection – all the way up to 9K.

9K means it can withstand powerful high-temperature water jets.

This level of protection is not required for everyday phones.

Today, most have a rating of 7 or 8.

A rating of 7 means it can be submerged underwater to a depth of 1 meter for 30 minutes.

Meanwhile, 8 is a bit more – submersion to 1 meter or more depth.

Manufacturers conduct many of their own tests and tell you how much your device can withstand. So be sure to check their website for official information before diving in.
