A supporter of “Islamic State” has been found guilty of the murder of conservative MP David Amess, who was killed in his constituency last year.
Ali Harbi Ali stabbed the Southend West MP more than 20 times when Amess met members of the public at a local church in October 2021.
Ali was found guilty of murder and preparing acts of terrorism on Monday and will be sentenced on Wednesday.
He had denied the allegations, claiming he targeted the MP for his vote for airstrikes on Syria, but the judge, Judge Sweeney, said Ali had no legal defense for the killing.
During the trial, jurors heard how the killer had researched and planned attacks on other MPs, including Cabinet Secretary Michael Gove, whom Ali believed was “harming Muslims”.
Ali stabbed Amess after sneaking into a meeting by pretending to be a National Health Service worker relocating to the area.
In his testimony, Ali told the court he wanted to travel to Syria to join Islamic State, but it was too “difficult” so he decided to “help Muslims here” instead.
He said he had no regrets or shame about the murder, telling the court, “If I thought I had done anything wrong, I wouldn’t have.”
Amess had served as an MP for 24 years, and his death drew tributes from across the political spectrum and raised new questions about the personal safety of British MPs, who are open to the public at weekly meetings known as “operations”. provide. ”
After his death, Boris Johnson announced that Southend, the constituency of Amess, would be granted city status, one of the many causes dear to the late MP.
