Labor Senator Marie Sherlock said she would like to see either Ivana Bacik or Duncan Smith as the party’s new leader after Alan Kelly resigned last night.
he Tipperary TD resigned as chairman after his party expressed a loss of confidence in him.
In an emotional press conference last night, the leader of the Labor Party said he would have liked to lead the party to the next general election.
Senator Sherlock said the party’s newest TDs, Ivana Bacik and Duncan Smith, are the ones she would like to see at the helm.
“I’m well aware that there are two people coming my way, our newest two TDs of the party,” she said on RTÉ Radio One Tomorrow Ireland.
“Ivana Bacik is a very good friend of mine and we saw her impressive victory in the by-election and also Duncan Smith, our TD at Dublin Fingal, did an incredible job on the ground and also in the Dail.”
Ms Sherlock said she had “no idea” if the two TDs would propose their names as party leaders.
“Alan just resigned last night, we haven’t started the leadership process yet and that will all show in the coming days,” she added.
“This is a sad day for the party and none of us would like Alan to step down but the party is more than any one of us and we are absolutely clear that we must make changes if we survive want.”
The Senator said the Labor Party has been struggling since it came into power and that radical change was needed.
“Leadership in the Labor Party is not something to be held at all costs, we have known for some time that the Labor Party is struggling to survive,” she said.
“While we work extremely hard, the reality is that we are finding it very difficult to assert ourselves, our poll numbers are flat and Labour’s reign is a legacy that continues to linger.
“The reality for the party now is that we need a generational shift, we need a fresh start, and if radical change is to be made it has to start at the top of the party.”
