Back in 2021, the live-action series Cowboy Bebop debuted as a Netflix Original and streamed exclusively on the service for an entire season. Prior to its release, the show generated a decent amount of chatter online due to its popularity and fans’ love for anime and manga, although most were still reluctant to translate it into live action.
Unfortunately for Cowboy Bebop fans, the live-action adaptation didn’t garner enough attention when it came to actual viewership, as Netflix decided to cancel the series just a few weeks after its debut. This was likely further aided by the fact that Cowboy Bebop (2021) received a plethora of reviews, leaning on the negative side.
A few years later, we learn that even Shinichiro Watanabe, the director of the original Cowboy Bebop anime, didn’t even get to watch the series.
In conversation with forbesWatanabe said after watching the beginning of the first episode he realized, “It definitely wasn’t cowboy bebop.” He then talks about how he came to the conclusion that because he wasn’t involved in an adaptation , “It Wouldn’t Be Cowboy Bebop”.
Cowboy Bebop fans have been vocal with a petition to save the show on social media, which currently has over 150,000 signatures. Voice actor notable Steve Blum, who is the English voice of the anime’s main character, has also expressed his support for the live-action adaptation and signed the petition.
Ultimately, though, Netflix has the final say on whether or not this version of the series will continue. That seems incredibly unlikely at this point, given the glut of content Netflix is releasing coupled with the fact that they’re now notorious for canceling shows, even those with vocal fan bases.
