Does the world need child stars? Former teenage Nickelodeon star Jennette McCurdy’s experience speaks heavily against her. McCurdy recently published a memoir detailing her experiences as one of the stars of iCarly and revealing the control her abusive mother had over her life. McCurdy was brought into acting by a mother who wanted to use her daughter as a proxy for her own unfulfilled dreams. McCurdy eventually had to endure her mother’s forced control, emotional and sexual abuse at home, and some deeply disturbing experiences working for Nickelodeon — including the pressures of drinking alcohol and being photographed in a bikini.

My whole childhood and adolescence was very exploited,” says McCurdy, now 30 The New York Times. “It still gives my nervous system a reaction to say it. There have been cases where people had the best of intentions and might not know what they were doing. And also cases where they did – they knew exactly what they were doing.”
