Residents will be given the opportunity to comment on plans to eliminate council tax payments for those in Worthing who are facing the greatest financial difficulties.
Anyone on a low income is eligible to apply for council tax assistance to reduce the amount they pay in council tax each year, and some residents can waive the fee entirely.
However, in Worthing, all working-age residents are required to pay council tax of at least £5 per week, equivalent to £260.71 per year.
Worthing Borough Council is keen to see this minimum fee removed and would like to hear the public’s views on what support should be made available to those who need it most.
Council President Dr. Beccy Cooper said: “We want to hear the public’s opinion on whether there should be a lower minimum payment or whether people stick to the rules for determining the amount of Council Tax Support for working people in old age Residents should be subject to the same rules as pensioners, meaning those on the lowest incomes would be exempt.”
