‘It took us 24 hours to get her, she was the last one taken out’ – Parents of Creeslough victim Leona Harper on ‘Edelstein’ daughter

The parents of 14-year-old Leona Harper have paid tribute to their “very special” daughter.

Eona was one of 10 victims who tragically died in the explosion at a petrol station in Creeslough, Co Donegal on Friday afternoon.

Donna and Hugh Harper this morning thanked those involved in their daughter’s recovery.

Leona was choosing an ice cream from the fridge with her friend when the explosion took place.

It was believed the teenager was leaving for a friend’s overnight stay. Leona was a student at Mulroy College, Milford.

After Friday afternoon’s blast, Donna and Hugh said they had a painful wait when told their daughter was trapped inside the building.

Speaking on Highland Radio this morning, Hugh described his daughter as a lovely person who loved being outside and playing sports.

“Leona was a little gem, very outgoing and very friendly, a lovely person. She was very calm and relaxed, loved life and nature. Walking through fields and going fishing and spending time with friends going to car shows,” he said.

“She was very special and she will be greatly missed.”

Leona’s mother Donna thanked the emergency services for their quick response to the tragedy. She said Leona was the last victim to be removed from the site of the blast.

“I knew the backhoe operator personally, thanks to him because he just didn’t stop until he caught her,” she said.

“It took 24 hours before we got her, she was the last one taken out. But the doctors and everyone else was great, they treated the whole thing with nothing but respect from start to finish.”

She had played for the Letterkenny Rugby Club under-14 team. The talented player was remembered as a “beautiful” girl who also loved boxing.

It had taken Leona a year to box. But the rugby club said rugby was “her first love”.

In a post online, Leona’s brother Anthony said: “I don’t know where to start Leona, I couldn’t have asked for a better sister. We all love you so much.”

Leona is survived by her parents, Hugh and Donna, and her brothers, Anthony and Jamie.
