‘It was a calculated attack on a woman’ – Complaint against ex-Fianna Fáil TD Marc MacSharry after Dáil breakout

Independent TD Marc MacSharry has been referred to an internal Dáil committee after an outburst that forced the House’s suspension on Wednesday.

The Dáil Business Committee referred a complaint by independent TD Thomas Pringle against Mr MacSharry to the Dáil Privileges and Procedures Committee at a meeting yesterday morning.

Leas-Ceann Comhairle Catherine Connolly suspended the Dáil on Wednesday after Mr MacSharry claimed he was being discriminated against over speaking time and refused to accept a decision by the Chair that his point was out of order.

“It was also an attack on a woman which I believe had the greatest impact at the time,” Mr Pringle wrote.

“He attacked not only the Leas, but all the independent members of the House in his own language, and I don’t think that’s acceptable.

“While I have no problem with a member raising what they see as a problem in the house, the personalized nature of the comments was inappropriate and should be addressed.”

A source for the committee said the complaint had been referred to the Dáil’s Privileges and Procedures Committee.

Mr MacSharry declined to comment when contacted yesterday.

The Sligo-Leitrim TD resigned from the Fianna Fáil party last week after an attempt to be reinstated was delayed by a disciplinary complaint from a party colleague in his constituency alleging bullying via text message.

In Wednesday’s Dáil, Mr MacSharry saw the Taoiseach fail to engage when he raised the issue of modular housing for Ukrainian refugees in Sligo when locals have been on the housing list for 10 years.

Mr Martin had previously insisted that “Ukrainians are not influencing the housing market”.

Told by Ms Connolly that he was “completely out of order”, Mr MacSharry said: “All I ask is that I get more than 30 seconds every two weeks and I wish you would study the standing order and accept it for the fact that this is a very legitimate point for people to make a case for saying a few words.”

Ms Connolly informed him he had not followed through on her decision, adding: “I am adjourning the Dáil now.”

Mr MacSharry’s microphone was then muted and he later walked out. Mr MacSharry wrote to Ms Connolly on Wednesday to complain about his lack of speaking time during Dáil questions on promised legislation.

“When I’m selected, on average every two weeks or so, I’m consistently listed towards the end where I inevitably face the harassment of you knocking on the bell before I get a chance to even halfway answer my question, so I’ve only ever gotten to the bottom within the last three or four times,” he wrote in his complaint.
