‘It was very moving’ – Crown’s Dominic West playing with his son in controversial fifth season

A new cast of actors are stepping into their royal roles as The Crown returns to our screens this week, none newer than Senan West, who plays the young Prince William for his real father. It’s Dominic West, it’s Charles.

or 14-year-old Senan, this will be his first acting role, which his father describes as “very moving”. Speaking at Netflix’s press conference for the fifth season, Dominic West said filming the show was the first time he’d seen his son act.

“He’s never acted before because Covid has stopped all his school plays,” he said, adding that it made more sense to see Senan’s first performance on screen. so many.

Oftentimes, filming with kids isn’t an easy feat, as Dominic pointed out, because “obviously it’s very difficult to have physical intimacy when you’re with child actors.” . Since the soon-to-be king’s son is his own son, he says that makes the process much easier.

On the other hand, he said it added a layer of difficulty to the emotional side. “You know, I’m talking about your mother but not your real mother…that’s a bit weird”

A key part of the story in this installment is the scandalous and public divorce between Charles and Diana (played by Elizabeth Debicki), which leaves both children stuck in its web. For Debicki, having a good relationship with her on-screen family “is an important part of the story”.

“I love my kids on the show,” Debicki said, admitting that she texted Robert Sterne, the show’s casting director, to thank him for casting Prince William and Harry so well.

Casting is not the only aspect that has been thoroughly evaluated, as the team has gone to great lengths to show viewers that behind the facade of the royal family lies a machine for those below. In Debicki’s case, the costume department in particular had a big job ahead of them.

“It’s basically a psychological conversation you have about accessing whether this person is behind closed doors in that silhouette,” she said. One can hardly think of Diana in the 1990s without thinking of the “revenge dress” she wore the night Charles confessed to adultery on television.
