The Zebre United Rugby Championship uniforms played their part in the combat humanitarian effort Invasion of Russia belong to Ukraine after helping the families of players at a Kyiv club escape the country.

More than 1.5 million refugees have left Ukraine since the Russian president Vladimir Putin ordered a full-scale invasion of the country on 24 February, while more than 400 civilian deaths were confirmed.

In an effort to help defuse the crisis, on Monday, Zebre confirmed that a coach sent by the Italian team had successfully evacuated 49 Ukrainians to Parma, where the URC side is located.

Most of the people on the bus were women, children and the elderly who were related to the players in Kyiv Rugby RC Polytechnic apparel, whose link to Zebre was only established a few months ago.

It was not known at the time what significant impact that relationship would have when a Ukrainian player from local club Kyiv traveled to Parma to watch ‘Zebra’ play.

While more than forty family members successfully crossed the border to Italy, players from RC Polytechnic University remained in their homeland to help fend off the Russian invaders.

“We have done what we feel is right to do at a time like this,” said Michele Dalai, president of Zebre in a statement. “

Zebre confirmed all those who made the journey from the Ukrainian border were in “good health” when they arrived in Italy.

49 people were evacuated on a single Zebre bus for less than a the number of visas the UK government has issued to Ukrainian refugees to date.

The French Interior Minister, Gerald Darmanin, called the British effort “inhumane”, while the Shadow Interior Secretary Yvette Cooper speak Careful partner Priti Patel “need to grab. This is embarrassing.”

Along with their evacuation efforts, Zebre started a GoFundMe calling to help RC Polytechnic players and their families, has so far raised over €10,000 (£8,300) of his €200,000 (£166,000) goal.
