Italy vs England LIVE: Latest Nations League updates – Three Lions battle for relegation at San Siro

‘So unreal, it’s such a privilege’ – striker Toney on England’s first appeal

England are looking to avoid relegation in the Nations League against Italy at the San Siro tonight. After crushing defeats by Hungary in June and draws against Italy and Germany, the Drei Löwen sit bottom of Group 3 on just two points. They are three points behind tonight’s opponents and a loss tonight means Gareth’s men Southgate will be relegated to League B.

What’s more, those two Nations League games – England also play Germany on Monday night – are the last chances for Southgate to get a feel for his squad before the World Cup begins in Qatar later this year.

The line-up the England manager opts for tonight will show his priorities as a strong team of experienced first-choice picks would show just how important he is to being in the top flight of the Nations League. On the other hand, with just two games left before the World Cup, Southgate could decide to give playing time to players pushing for spots like Ivan Toney, who could make his debut for the national team.

Follow all the action at the San Siro as Italy host England in the Nations League:

Italy 0-0 England

36 mins: Reece James sends a low corner to the near post where Declan Rice tries to flick it down the middle. The move fails and the ball rolls to Jude Bellingham, who smashes a tame try into the ground and sends it straight back to Gianluigi Donnarumma.

Italy 0-0 England

33 mins: Sterling is fouled on the left wing and Foden rolls the free-kick into the box which is looked past Harry Kane. The ball bounces to Reece James, who runs on it and drills a shot at goal.

A rebound shoots into the rear of what should have been a corner, but the referee gives Italy a goal-kick.

Italy 0-0 England

30 mins: Federico Dimarco swings a corner kick into the box and sends the ball straight into Nick Pope’s hands. This wasn’t the most exciting game by far, but England hold their own.

Italy 0-0 England

27 mins: A free kcik for Italy is sent wide to Barella but it’s quickly knocked down by Foden.

Italy must withdraw and switch to Di Marco on the left wing. Di Lorenzo finds his cross, but the defender can’t control it properly and the attack falters.

Italy 0-0 England

24 mins: James cleared another cross from the right. England then plays the ball to the opposite side of the field, where Foden sends it to Bukayo Saka.

He loses the ball and Italy flies into the space he vacated. Barella takes the ball down the wing and whips in a cross. It doesn’t reach Raspadori and Eric Dier gets it off.

Italy 0-0 England

21min: That’s decent work from England to spread the ball wide and try to pull Italy out of position. The Three Lions now look more secure in possession with Jude Bellingham, Reece James and Phil Foden playing well together.

James sends a cross into the box towards Harry Kane but Leonardo Bonucci is there to make it clear.

Italy 0-0 England

18 mins: Italy wins a free-kick down the right flank of England’s final third. In a rather extravagant set piece, Di Marco whips the ball into the penalty area and it’s turned around for a corner.

Rice and Scamacca come together for the next set piece and the Italy forward calls for a foul. Free kick for England.

Italy 0-0 England

15 mins: Harry Kane attempts to charge his way into the box, shifting by one defender before meeting the next two. This is a better time for the Three Lions who now have more ball control.

However, they need to do it faster and seem unimaginative when Italy aren’t pushing forward.

Italy 0-0 England

12 mins: Raheem Sterling shifts the ball away from Rafael Toloi and pulls the big defender in for a foul. It’s an opportunity for the visitors to put the ball in play but the delivery isn’t great and Italy manage to put it clear.

Harry Maguire stays on the pitch as England try to recycle the ball. Sterling is played on the left wing and hisses the cross over to the defender.

Maguire heads for the ball but only sends it into the arms of Gianluigi Donnarumma.

Italy 0-0 England

9 min: England struggle to get the ball, especially in midfield. Jude Bellingham receives a pass but is unaware that Raspadori is coming from behind. Bellingham is eliminated and England slow down the game with a free kick. Italy vs England LIVE: Latest Nations League updates – Three Lions battle for relegation at San Siro
