AFTER the heat since early July, Southern Water had only asked that people use water sparingly.
So I contacted Southern Water in mid-July to inquire if there would be a hosepipe ban. I was surprised to learn that no ban was proposed at the time.
Unfortunately, too many people ignore instructions and advice on how to save water. Asking people not to flush the toilet every time they spend a dime is okay — it saves us money in the end.
But as some consumers hosed down their lawn and sprayed their patio in the driest July in almost 40 years, Southern Water had to take a more determined stance, especially after record-breaking temperatures in the UK.
In any case, I am pleased that there is finally a ban on tubing for August on the Isle of Wight and Hampshire.
I too would like a green lawn, but I don’t appreciate having to queue at a standpipe for drinking and bathing water.
